Informing the West Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy
This project brought together stakeholders from across West Yorkshire to shape the West Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy. These new strategies, introduced across England, aim to create a connected network of wildlife-rich places and boost biodiversity. The work involved designing thoughtful ways of listening to and working with a variety of stakeholder groups, overcoming barriers to engagement and facilitating meaningful discussions to ensure that local voices directly informed the policy, from the beginning. Through different phases we listened to and engaged with different stakeholders including: farmers, landowners, young people, local community groups and eNGO’s.
My role focused mostly on how we might bring farmers into the conversation, harness their deep knowledge of local land, and understand the nuances between nature conservation and farming practices. As part of the strategy we hired a young farmer as part of our team and co-produced a number of different methods to listen to farmers. Their perspectives were compiled in a handbook (edited by farmers) to be read by WYCA and embedded within the developing policy.
